This was an old three-story concrete warehouse that was being converted to office use, and our job was to give it a lobby, a staircase, and an entrance. The solution was to cut a large three-story shaft for the lobby/staircase, introduce a strip skylight along the back wall to balance the light, and then just design a really dramatic staircase as the "sculpture" within the space. Plate steel construction combined with precast concrete treads provided an economical solution for the stairs, leaving enough budget to allow for a glass canopy and a stacked glass window that add stylistic punch to the entry.
